The Story Behind Respect the Road

On July 27, 2024, our lives changed forever. Our dad, husband, grandfather, brother, and friend, Billy Heeney, lost his life in a preventable motorcycle collision caused by careless driving.

In the months that followed, we struggled to make sense of what had happened. Like so many families affected by tragedy, we were left with grief, unanswered questions, and a desire to create something meaningful from our loss.

That is how Respect the Road was born.

Every year, far too many motorcyclists lose their lives because of distracted driving, impatience, or a momentary lapse in judgment. While we know we cannot eliminate every tragedy, we believe that raising awareness can make a difference. Our goal is to encourage drivers to be more mindful, to look twice, and to remember that every rider is someone's loved one.

This event began because of a heartbreaking loss in our own family, but it is not just about our story. It is for everyone who has lost someone, everyone who rides, and everyone who believes that safer roads matter.

Respect the Road brings people together to honour loved ones, promote motorcycle awareness, and support an important cause. Through our memorial ride, community event, and fundraising efforts, we are proud to support SickKids Hospital while continuing to spread a message that could help save lives.
